Our Quick Guide On How to Make Your Own Pollen Patties
Feeding your bees is essential for their health and productivity, especially during times when natural pollen is scarce. Making your own pollen patties at home is simple, cost-effective, and ensures your bees get the nutrition they need. Here’s a step-by-step guide tailored for beekeepers.
Ingredients
To make your own pollen patties, you will need:
- 1/3 pollen powder: Choose a high-quality pollen substitute such as Vitahive.
- 1/3 granulated white cane sugar: Provides an additional carbohydrate source for energy.
- 1/3 2:1 sugar syrup: Acts as a binding agent and further carbohydrate source. (To make 2:1 sugar syrup, dissolve 2 parts sugar into 1 part water.)
- 2% canola or rapeseed oil: Enhances palatability and texture; as well as providing essential dietary fats.
Method
- Combine ingredients: Mix equal parts pollen powder, granulated sugar, and 2:1 sugar syrup in a large bowl.
- Add oil:Incorporate 2% canola or rapeseed oil into the mixture.
- Adjust consistency: If the mixture is too dry or too sticky, adjust by adding slightly more pollen powder or sugar syrup until you reach the desired consistency.
- Shape the patties:Roll or press the mixture into flat patties that can easily fit inside your hive.
- Store properly: If not used immediately, wrap the patties in wax paper or plastic wrap and store them in a cool, dry place.
