An excellent up-to-date, practically useful book, based on New Zealand experience combating varroa destructor mites in honey bees, but also including information on other relevant international experiences and research. It is well structured, science based, and includes specific information on the mite's life cycle within bee colonies, the use, benefits, limitations, and drawbacks of various chemical miticide treatments, on various colony management strategies that can help slow mite population growth, and compares alternative methods of "testing" to determine whether mite loads are high enough for chemical treatment to be advisable. Chemical contamination of honey and wax , and management to minimise these are also covered, as are the development of miticide resistance, and efforts to breed more "hygienic" bees that remove mites while they are developing inside the bee brood cells.
As an amateur beekeeper in Australia, I've found the book a believable source of authoritative information at a time when local experience is lacking.

Control is important

Control is important however the current strategy has become out of hand and we must move forward towards managing. We are currently destroying our bee population at an alarming rate. We should be building not destroying. Varroa is manageable if bee keepers are given the tools and knowledge
